At some point, Volkswagen made the crankcases for Type 1 and Type 3 engines universal.
The hole provided for the filler pipe on a Type 3 engine was not applicable for a Type 1 engine, so it was closed off with a cover plate.
This is the gasket that goes under the cover plate when the Type 3 oil filler is not used.
